One of the leading manufacturers of Glassfibre Reinforced Concrete, more commonly known as GRC, is BB fiberbeton A/S. The Danish manufacturer, established in 1984, is located close to Copenhagen in Denmark. BB fiberbeton produces more than 60,000 m2 GRC per year, which is used for balconies and facades amongst other things. One of BB fiberbeton’s current projects is SKY PARK by Zaha Hadid Architects in Bratislava, Slovakia – a new 20,000 m2 public park with more than 700 apartments and 55,000 m2 office and retail space. BB fiberbeton produces the facade cladding consisting of 12 mm GRC mounted on a steel frame with wall ties. BB fiberbeton has used FEM-Design for more than 2 years to analyze the force distribution in the GRC elements. The facade cladding for this particular project differs from most other projects since the cladding is curved in multiple directions, which makes the task of analyzing the strain and stresses in the elements a lot tougher. The responsible structural engineer at BB fiberbeton, Ronni Jensen, explains how FEM-Design helps in completing this task:
By combining polygonal shell elements in FEM-Design and FEM-Designs feature to import DWG-files from AutoCAD, it was possible to create a structure with a static behavior similar to the end product.
When asked if he’s satisfied with FEM-Design and the collaboration with StruSoft in general, Ronni Jensen ended our conversation with:
– Very – without StruSoft FEM-Design, we would not be able to solve such complex projects as demanded nowadays.
